Avonhead-Russley Community Network
Project Description: Avonhead-Russley Community Network Community Directory
Client: Avonhead-Russley Community Network
Project Overview:
Daniel Price Art & Design was approached in 2024 to be the artistic lead and designer for the production of a community-oriented directory that had a variety of contact details for various community and not-for-profit groups around the Avonhead-Russley area in Christchurch. This work was done in a voluntary capacity and as part of a team of volunteers, alongside the Christchurch City Council's community outreach officer for the area.
Design Challenge:
The project initially needed a brand identity representative of the community, and then had to produce a finished and printable product that was going to be distributed to letterboxes around the area, and on the CCC website. Collated information and details on listed groups were to be compiled and organized in an aesthetically pleasing and highly legible manner, which catered to a variety of people and ages living in the area. All within a certain succinct timeframe.
Creative Solution:
Working within a team organizing and compiling the project. Daniel Price Art & Design designed a bespoke visual identity for the organization which would carry into the wider project. Drawing on and collaborating with the cultural expertise of Whakaraupō Carving Centre & Trust, and with collaboration with local photographer Ian Gardiner to create:
- Logo for A.R.C.N: The logo reflects the natural features, history, and community spirit of Avonhead and Russley while honoring its connection to Ōtautahi and its people. Created alongside cultural experts to create a product that fully encompassed cultural elements in a sensitive and respectful manner
- Finished Community Directory for Web & Print: Daniel Price Art & Design worked to formulate a complete directory based on the data collected by the wider Avonhead-Russley Community Network team that was appropriate for production into a printed copy and an interactive digital copy for online viewing. Design influences from the logo creation were carried over into designs within the directory, and extensive typesetting / layout work was done to ensure a result that looked good and was easily readable - with all necessary information included
- Ads for Sponsors of the Project: The cost of production was offset by private sponsorship from businesspeople or firms that believed in the value of the project and the exposure it would receive. Part of the process of laying out the directory involved the production of a handful of advertisements for some sponsors that requested them. These involved clearly communicating information that sponsors wished to have communicated to potential viewers in a stylish and succinct manner, and organizing these within the layout of the directory - accounting for limited space and a variety of sizes involved.
Project Results:
The project was well received in the community. and over 7,000 copies were distributed to homes in the area general responses about the project highlighted it as a valuable resource for the community which effectively communicates what various groups have to offer. The directory highlights local services, activities,
groups, and sports clubs, providing a valuable resource for new and long-time residents. and can be viewed at:
